Now it’s time for them to leave behind their highschool status and move onto bigger things. “What I’m going to miss the most is all my classes with Mr. Andres,” said senior Sarah Kvacik. The mixed of emotions that come with graduating can be seen on all of their faces as they walk to the last class they’ll have. “I’m scared of doing everything on my own,” said senior Alejandro Espinosa.

As they made their last walk through the halls, students lined up to look at the graduating class of 2012. Senior Alex Bellerieve said; “I think I’ll miss not having my parent’s around the most.” Leaving behind new and old friendships, and taking everything they’ve learned with them the senior class will never be forgotten and will always be remembered for the memories they’ve created.

Marvel movies have become extremely popular in the past few years. Their most recent success was “The Avengers,” which was a huge box office hit. “The Avengers” provided a well performed action-comedy for all audiences to enjoy.

I am a huge Marvel fan so going to see this, I expected it to be one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and it was at that. This is a movie that took many stars and threw them together, hoping that they would provide the right environment for the movie. The distribution between roles and scenes was very well done.

“The Avengers” team consists of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and The Hulk.

It was such a huge success that they already have plans and scenes made for the sequel. The sequel is to be released in 2015, it is also been revealed that there will be sequels released later this year for Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. Marvel is not planning on making solo movies for the heroes Hawkeye or Black Widow.

The 3D experience honestly did not do to much for this movie and I would have most likely enjoyed it more without it. The glasses just provide discomfort and made it somewhat hard to focus entirely on the movie. So I would recommend seeing the movie without the 3D feature. Overall I enjoyed it so I give it five out of five stars.

Tuesday marked the twelth annual art show.

The art show was originally thought up by art teachers Larry Cullins and Nancy Lysell. They felt there were no other opportunities for all of the students to showcase their art.

The show brought in roughly 300 people and showcased 15 seniors. Students took two days to help set up for the event. It consisted of a collaboration with the music department in which they performed while visitors admired the showcases. Any art student, passing or not, was allowed to put their art in the show.

“It’s like teaching; when you watch your kids succeed, there’s no other feeling.” Said Cullins when asked how he felt about the senior students this year.

Senior Brenton Hilbig, an art student of three years, had nine pieces in the show, he received a few Excellence Ribbons which are awarded by the teachers to students who represent the artistic talent this year. The “Halo” and “Predator” franchises became very big inspirations in his artwork.

“My dad and I would just mess around drawing on cardboard, I feel like I got a head start over the other kids my age.”

Senior Monica Burch has been in art for one semester and had nine pieces in the show. Out of all the pieces she had, her favorite is the cross mosaic that she made for her grandma. Her grandma is her biggest inspiration; she encouraged Monica from a young age to pursue art.

“I wish I had spent more time in art, I think I’d be more skilled but I am happy that I got to take it this semester.”

While most express their seriousness through art, some like to take a different approach. Junior Will Shadwick had four pieces in the show, very comedic pieces at that. Many seemed to enjoy his paintings, while others tried to figure out the true meanings behind them. He has had his work showcased in three other art shows.

“My biggest inspiration is my humor. I have alot of random drawings that I really enjoy,” said Shadwick.

Any pieces displayed in the showcase are available for purchase if the artist is willing to sell them. To find out more about this, please contact Larry Cullins in the Art Department.

“I felt happy I got [the phone call],” Sophomore Pratik Patel said. “But then I had to make a decision which was hard.” The phone call came from Fort Hays State University saying Patel had been accepted into the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science, KAMS.

Patel said he learned about KAMS when he went on an ‘Information Day’ field trip at the beginning of this year. “I was interested, applied and eventually I got in,” Patel said. “Its a good opportunity, I get to learn new things and get ahead in life.”

Patel said KAMS was an ‘early entrance into college’ program. “You get community experience,” Patel said. “You live in the dorms while going to school and you work for 68 credit hours.”

For the next two years Patel will be studying and attending classes at this half-high school, half-college program. “I’ve been [at the University] a few times on a tour,” said Patel. “I got to see different buildings like the dorm rooms.”

Unfortunately, the KAMS program is only for students who are Juniors the year attending KAMS but luckily, you only need to be in one–if not, more–advanced class. “You want to be at least in Algebra II,” Patel said. “Because you start off on pre-calculus or calculus.”

“I think it’ll be hard and difficult in the beginning,” said Patel. “My work ethic is good so I should be fine.”

The first home Track meet in 5 years was held by South High on Tuesday. Many upperclassmen enjoy the fact that they don’t have to travel for every Track meet this season, though some of the lower class men may not appreciate it the way that Juniors or Seniors that have been apart of track for all four years do.

The girls have had a good season so far, and place third in the meet on Tuesday. There were 4 first placements, 3 second placements, and 4 third placements for the girls. Many names showed up often, a few examples being Junior Calla Hill, Sophomore Shaelyn Martin, Freshman Malieque Tolbert, and Senior Hannah Hadnot, all of them in a different grades

In some sports, the varsity players usually consist of Seniors and a few Juniors, but in the track team, everything is spread out. There are equal amounts of all grades on the team. With a diverse set of athletes on the team, it is nice to have a home track to show off our skills.

Senior Charles Scot says, “It feels good to be right at home,” while Senior Brian Francois says it is “More convenient.” Which is agreeable, many students would enjoy not having to drive for an hour after a meet just to get back home. Both Scot and Tolbert agree that it feels more like a practice than a meet. Even with the new track and jumping station, the work still isn’t finished. Some time in the next two weeks, before the Salina Central Invitational, a new shot-put and discus arena will be added. Hopes are high for this years track team, especially for the girls who have continued to place in and win meets.

On Tuesday, April 10 the Toms shoe company held a “Day without shoes” to raise awareness of students who do not have proper clothing. By having their customers not wear shoes it raises curiosity among others, therefore having them join in on the change.

“I like what Toms shoes does and I think it’s good to spread awareness to the kids who don’t have shoes all around the world,” said sophomore Barret Koch.

“I think it’s cool, I like that you get to help out little kids without shoes and you get to help out communities,” said junior Hayley Hager,” It’s nice to be a part of raising awarness for a good cause.”

On April 10th of last year, people went to 1,000 events, without shoes, in over 25 countries around the world.

It seems like the schools trying to hold us here, until the very last minute necessary.

For teachers like Mr. Garber and Mrs. Jones, the power being off is a huge thing. Considering most of their class involves being on our schools computers. Unlike the last blackout, this one was during lunch hour. Which in half of the schools case, could leave your lunch cold, nasty and your nacho cheese congealed.

The lunch ladies can try their hardest to keep the food warm, but without electricity there’s only so much you can do. As you walked through the line for your crispito, which is the sacred lunch food everyone looks forward to you could hear the lunch ladies in the hot food line saying things such as; ” Well your food’s getting cold, and we’re getting hot.” Well, thats a nice comforting feeling. And I’m sure it wasn’t their intentions to feed us bad food, but everyone wanted fed.

With the first blackout, it was understandable, we were only in second hour and there was still time in the day to learn things. But with the second we were less than an hour away from ELO, and honestly we can read at home. So with all the problems the blackouts can cause, I don’t see why they are keeping us here. Do they want us to get food poisoning?
